Boire la coupe jusqu’à la lie

The expression boire la coupe jusqu’à la lie (bwar la coop jshewska la lee) literally means “to drink the cup to the dregs,” but literally means to stick with something until the bitter end. You can also substitute le vin (the wine) and le calice (the chalice) for la coupe. A cup you’ll want to drink to the dregs is the hot chocolate from MarieBelle’s Cacao Bar at 484 Broome Street in New York’s Soho – and the dregs aren’t one bit bitter. This is no ordinary cup of chocolate; it is blended from the finest quality Columbian chocolate of not less than 63% cacao content. The basic blend is called Aztec, and there is also Dark (73% cacao), Mocha, and Spicy (my favorite). All flavors can be blended with water (the European way) or milk (the North American preference) and are available in sizes small, medium, and large. Chocoholic that I am, I can only handle a small as the flavor is so rich. In fact, the beverage can be turned into a pudding just by chilling it for an hour! The chocolate powder is available for purchase at the Broome Street location, at high-end boutiques, and on-line at www.mariebelle.com. It’s good to the last drop.
