Propre comme un sou neuf

It did my heart good this weekend to see the fine quality outpouring of effort to clean up Tahrir Square in Cairo in the aftermath of the efforts to topple a repressive government. Taking responsibility for the mess seems like a good omen for a nation poised for change.

Today’s exression, propre comme un sou neuf, (propruh come uh sue nuff) literally means “clean as a new penny” (a sou being a French coin no longer in circulation). We’d probably say “as clean as a whistle.”
