Appeler un chat un chat

There was a cute story in the news today. David Cameron, the current resident of 10 Downing Street, has a new staff member on the payroll. Larry, a four year-old stray tabby adopted from the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, has been brought in to control the rats that have been seen in the area. Larry apparently has a fine quality predatory instinct developed during his former life on the street.

Today’s expression, appeler un chat un chat, (applay un sha un sha) literally means “to call a cat a cat.” We’d say, “to call a spade a spade.” I sure hope Larry can tell the difference between two-footed and four-footed rats!
