Poule de luxe

Forbes magazine just named Bernard Arnault the richest man in Europe and the fourth richest internationally with a fortune estimated at 41 billion dollars. Arnaud is the head of LVMH, the luxury goods conglomerate that includes Louis Vuitton, Moët-Hennessy, Veuve Cliquot, Dior, and Fendi. When he’s not acquiring or expanding businesses, Arnault plays the piano with considerable skill. He’s also a noted art collector and the Louis Vuitton foundation for contemporary art is slated to open in Paris next year.

Today’s expression, poule de luxe (pool duh looxs), literally means “a chicken of luxury.” It has a few rather derogatory meanings, such as being a trophy wife, but the kindest one is to have expensive tastes. If one was a consumer of LMVH products, one would certainly be a poule de luxe as well as helping Monsieur Arnault maintain, or improve, his international wealth ranking next year.
