Gloves are almost as fun as shoes. They can be practical (snore) or fabulous, so why not reach for fabulous? Since 1989, Chantal and Christian Canillac have been creating fabulous gloves at L’Atelier du Gantier, (The Glovemaker’s Workshop) in Millau (near Montpellier, in the south of France). If a glove-buying jaunt to France isn’t in your future, they can also be ordered on-line. The Canillacs show you exactly how to measure your hand to ensure a perfect fit. Since these gloves are custom-made, however, you’ll need to wait about a month before they’ll be keeping you warm in style, so Santa might need to slip an I.O.U. under the tree, or, perhaps better still, let you select the style, color, and trim yourself so you have something to look forward to after the holidays are a memory.
While you wait for your package to arrive, check out the video on their site that shows the steps in creating a custom glove, from stretching the hide to the showroom. But how to pick your favorite combination of color and style of glove? There are 67 (!) choices of leather – solids, prints, and metallics. Then how to decide on a style? Why decide? Indulge.
Today’s expression, aller comme un gant (allay kum uhn gahn) means “to go like a glove.” In other words, if something fits perfectly, or is completely appropriate for a situation, just like gloves are the ideal present.
