Le porte-drapeau

France just announced that its flag-bearer or porte-drapeau (port drahpoe) for the 2012 Summer Jeux Olympiques will be fencer Laura Flessel-Colovic. This will be the fifth Olympics for the 40 year-old mother of an 11 year-old daughter. Flessel has won five Olympic medals, more than any other French female athlete: two gold medals in Atlanta in 1996, for individual and team épée, a bronze individual medal in Sydney in 2000, and a bronze team medal and silver individual medal in Athens in 2004. She came up short in 2008, despite being heavily favored to medal again, so she’s got something to prove in 2012. Her nickname is “La Guepe” or “The Wasp” for her aggressive style. Flessel has a delightful effervescent personality and a radiant smile. It’ll be on full view in London as she waves the tri-couleur for all to see.
