I love shoes – particularly red ones – so it caught my eye that a shoe by Christian Louboutin has been named la chaussure la plus sexy (lah showsoor lah ploo sexE), the sexiest shoe, by the readers of Women’s Wear Daily. I must say I’m not keen on the studs on this particular shoe. Why is sexy synonymous with dominatrix?
When I was little, the red Buster Browns in this illustration made my heart flutter. In fact, I innocently wrangled a pair for myself when I was about four. I’d been on a play-date and my friend’s mother stopped in town on the way home to pick out shoes for her two children. I have no recollection at all of this day, but apparently once the other children had been fitted, I said, “And I’ll have a pair of red shoes.” And I did. My mother was mortified when I came skipping in the house with my new red shoes. She offered to pay for them, but my friend’s mother would hear none of it.
These days, I like a different kind of red shoe – Pas de Rouge (pah duh roozj), or “red step,” shoes may have a French name, but they’re made in Italy, just outside of Venice. I only have one pair, but I am resolved to only buy them from now on. (They’re pricey and a little hard to find, but if you click on the link above, you can ask them to tell you where their closest supplier is in relation to where you live.) They are ultra light and C-O-M-F-O-R-T-A-B-L-E without looking orthopedic. No matter what the color of the outside of the shoe, Pas de Rouge shoes are always lined in soft, red leather that miraculously doesn’t rub off, so I can wear my favorite color every day. Because the sexiest shoe is the one that makes you feel great as well as look great.
Red stiletto door-stop (I have this for my classroom door. Everyone loves it!)
