Dans le sens des aiguilles d’une montre

louis-vuitton-tambour-bijou-secret-2Fine watches and jewelry also have a Fashion Week. It’s taking place right now. Appropriately, the event takes place in Switzerland, the country synonymous with precise timepieces. It’s a big deal; in 2012, over 100 nations were represented at Baselworld. You’ll find companies that dedicate themselves only to creating watches, like Rolex and Patek Philippe, as well as those who also make other luxury goods, such as Dior and Chanel.

Hermes-Arceau-Volutes-Pocket-WatchThe challenge for Hermès and Louis Vuitton is to maintain their roots in luxury leather goods while having credibility in the precision world of elite timepieces. Hermès has been playing with the big boys for a century now, but they’re still relative newcomers. To prove their technical prowess, Hermès has invested in a huge pavilion for this year’s event. One of the exceptional pieces they’ll be showing is the Arceau Pocket Volute, above, whose case is inspired by one of their famous carrés from 1972. Another piece is the Arceau Pocket Amazones, below, that incorporates the beautiful enameling that adorns Hermès bracelets. This one is my favorite!

AmazonesIn comparison, Louis Vuitton is a newborn in the world of fine timepieces, having gotten their start only a decade ago. Suitable for a company that sponsors a major sailing event, their Tambour Twin Chrono, below, is a sportsman’s watch. You can time separate events, as well as keep an eye on the actual hour, thanks to the three dials. For women, they have the very stylish Tambour Bijou Secret, top of the page, whose dial is tucked behind the stylized four-petaled flower from their monogram. It’s available in black and white, as well as a variety of colored stones: turquoise, malachite, lapis-lazuli, pink mother-of-pearl, and blue aventurine.

I might get so diverted looking at these watches that I’d lose all track of time, however.
